AS A CENTRAL FIGURE ON WHAT IS ARGUABLY BBC RADIO’S BEST NON-MUSIC PROGRAMME – TEST MATCH SPECIAL – HENRY BLOFELD HAS BEEN RECRUITING NEW LISTENERS TO THE DELIGHTS OF FIVE-DAY INTERNATIONAL CRICKET FOR OVER FORTY YEARS. 

Though he knows his sporting stuff to the finest detail, his plummy voice and eccentric flights of fancy (sometimes seeming to describe everything but the cricket in front of him – buses, pigeons, cakes, fancy dress) have afforded him the luxury of cult status amongst old and young alike. Raconteur and bon vivant, the rakish 75-year-old undertakes a short tour of the UK this month with ex-TMS producer Peter Baxter (friend and often stooge). It’s billed as a “show for both cricket and non-cricket lovers”, and the pair offer audiences a hilarious, off-the-cuff trip down memory lane to discover untold stories – “cock ups” – from the TEST MATCH SPECIAL commentary box and beyond.
