DURING HIS FIFTY YEARS IN MUSIC, MANY NOTABLE CHARACTERS ORBITED THE WORK OF DAVID BOWIE. THERE ARE A SELECT FEW WHO WERE CENTRAL PARTS OF THE STORY – COLLABORATORS WHOSE NAMES, WHEN MENTIONED, EVOKE A PARTICULAR MAGIC…
Tony Visconti has a truly privileged perspective on Bowie’s peerless creativity – he was right there as things began to happen, and worked with him at many stages of his artistic development. Visconti produced the SPACE ODDITY (1969) and THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (1970) albums, co-produced YOUNG AMERICANS (1975) and, later, two runs of essential works – LOW (1977), “HEROES” (1977), LODGER (1979) and SCARY MONSTERS (1980) and then HEATHEN (2002), REALITY (2003), THE NEXT DAY (2013) and Bowie’s final offering BLACKSTAR (2016). Visconti was also producer of T-Rex and has worked with a huge array of artists over the decades including Thin Lizzy, Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Manic Street Preachers, U2, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers and Adam Ant, amongst many others. Currently he’s an integral part of Holy Holy – the Bowie-focused touring collective made up of musicians with close working or personal connections to Bowie, or whose own work has been influenced by him. In this new edition of The Mouthcast, recorded ahead of Holy Holy’s Spring Tour of the UK, Visconti looks back at his relationship with David Bowie…
