THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM FROM ELIZA CARTHY AND THE WAYWARD BAND IS AN EXTREMELY DYNAMIC REMINDER THAT THOUGH SHE MAY HAVE KEPT ONE FOOT IN THE FOLK CAMP DURING THE LAST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, SHE’S ALWAYS USED THE OTHER TO EXPLORE THE ELSEWHERE.
BIG MACHINE will be released on 3rd February 2017. It’s perhaps Eliza Carthy’s strongest record to date – certainly her most focused and resonant, being an expansive and compassionate treatise on some serious current issues. The reworked version of last year’s single YOU KNOW ME features MC Dizraeli and comments on the refugee crisis; the new single FADE AND FALL (LOVE NOT) concerns domestic abuse and was inspired by the writings of Caroline Norton, a Victorian-era woman whose efforts changed the law relating to the custody of children and the status of women in the event of marriage breakdown; there is a version of Ewan Maccoll’s THE FITTER’S SONG; and, of course, Eliza being Eliza, there is a song about dying from custard poisoning. In this new edition of The Mouthcast she talks about the themes of the album – including an impassioned section on the refugee crisis. We also reflect on the current position of UK folk music, and her acceptance of an MBE in 2014…
