GOING, GOING… – THE NEW ALBUM BY THE WEDDING PRESENT – IS A COLLECTION OF TWENTY INTERLINKED SONGS, EACH ACCOMPANIED BY ITS OWN FILM.
It’s out next week and sits comfortably alongside 1992’s THE HIT PARADE (twelve seven-inch singles in twelve months, equalling Elvis Presley’s record for the most UK Top Thirty hits in one year) and 1989’s UKRAINSKI VISTUPI V IVANA PEELA (a collection of Ukranian folk songs) as amongst the most ambitious projects the veteran indie noisemakers have ever realised and released. There are, of course, plenty of examples of The Wedding Present doing what they do best – efficient motorik indie, all circular chord structures and tramelling intensity – but GOING, GOING… highlights founding member David Gedge’s determination to continually push his own boundaries. It’s an album which might surprise even the most ardent of fans of the group – there are several ‘ambient’ / atmospheric instrumentals and, in occasional cases, traditional songwriting structures and typical The Wedding Present tropes have been sidelined in favour of experimentation. In this new edition of The Mouthcast David Gedge discusses GOING, GOING… and reveals a little of what it is that makes him tick, and has kept him ticking, for over three decades as frontman of this much-loved band…
