TOM HINGLEY

IN HIS 2012 BOOK CARPET BURNS TOM HINGLEY WROTE ABOUT HIS TENURE AS FRONTMAN OF INSPIRAL CARPETS; A BAND CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MADCHESTER SCENE OF THE LATE 1980s AND EARLY ’90s, BUT TAKING LESS INFLUENCE FROM THE DANCEFLOOR THAN IT DID FROM NUGGETS ERA PSYCHEDELIC GARAGE ROCK.

Hingley’s experiences in the band make for compelling reading – whether in the early days, schlepping up and down the UK’s motorways to small club gigs, or riding the charts, playing TOP OF THE POPS and selling out big gigs to his bittersweet departure. CARPET BURNS was written with the sort of verbose honesty – earnestness, almost – one comes to expect when spending any time in Hingley’s amiable company. In this new edition of The Mouthcast, recorded backstage just before a recent solo show, he briefly looks back at Inspiral Carpets… But in a sometimes spiralling conversation we concentrate on his solo work (his book, the forthcoming NO PEACE FOR THE GOOD LOOKING Record Store Day release and his archly named range of beers), and also take in the current state of world politics. In a section included here, but from before formal recording of the podcast began, we discuss the recent death of David Bowie…
