Upon its original 1988 release, the band’s second album began its thirty year journey as a cult classic… Commercially, in its day it failed to ‘hit home’ – having managed to confound critics and wider public alike, who’d invested in the misdirection of Virgin’s marketing of the band, and written them off as mere pop cannon-fodder. The album was progressive, detailed and intricate – hardly surprising to those who had been paying more than cursory attention, or had seen the band’s live shows. On it Dunnery and his bandmates managed to scratch away the pop sheen to reveal a purer form and, three decades on, it stands as testament to a hugely imaginative and fully committed group of musicians.
