MATT JOHNSON (THE THE)

THE SECOND ALBUM BY MATT JOHNSON PROJECT THE THE – A FOLLOW-UP TO 1983’S ACCLAIMED SOUL MINING – WAS A HIGHLY ATMOSPHERIC TREATISE ON LUST, OBSESSION, RELIGION, POLITICS, OPPRESSION AND DEATH.

Though 1989’s MIND BOMB was more cerebral, expansive and informed, the anger at the heart of Johnson’s expression of these recurring themes was perhaps never more viscerally realised than on INFECTED. Tense and often fevered, it existed, perhaps, in the intersection of an unlikely Venn diagram between machine-like industrial experimentation and heartfelt soul music. It was one of the defining releases of 1986, and the infamous series of evocative films originally produced to promote the album is about to see the light of day for the first time in thirty years, with a series of screenings at the ICA in London. In this new edition of The Mouthcast – the longest to date – Johnson discusses his work. He also reflects on the rise of ISIS, the popularity of Jeremy Corbyn and the decline of mainstream media in the face of the democratising advance of the internet…
