UK, US AND SWEDISH FOUR-PIECE ALL-GIRL GROUP THE FRANKLYS ISSUE DEBUT SINGLE PUPPET IN APRIL.
A five-track digital EP early in 2013 was first notice of The Franklys’ swaggering collision between freewheeling garage-rock and late 60s influenced rhythm ‘n’ blues, recalling the amphetamine grit of Ramones, The Flaming Sideburns, The Hellacopters and the throttling beats of Babes in Toyland.
In this brief new interview with The Mouth Magazine, The Franklys’ guitarist Fanny Broberg introduces the other members of the band (including drummer Nicole Pinto, who was co-writer of the Armand Van Helden hit COME PLAY WITH ME)…
HI FANNY, INTRODUCE US TO THE REST OF THE BAND…
Heeey! Sure thing, I can tell you a little bit about the other girls. Jen is crafty, creative and caring; Zoe is mysterious, smart and cool; Nicole is American, loud and funny… and I’m diplomatic, hungry and nice.
WHEN DID YOU GET THE FRANKLYS TOGETHER?
We all met in London, late 2011. Me and Jen knew each other since we were kids. First we met Zoe, she was living in Milton Keynes… but as soon as we started playing together we forced her to come and move in with us in a tiny flat in Hoxton, he he… Then we met Nicole on a night out, quickly realised we were a match. And that’s it!
WHAT ARE THE INFLUENCES THAT EACH OF YOU BRINGS..?
We all come from different backgrounds and listen to different things and manage to blend all our preferences in a big rock blur. I guess what we’ve always wanted when writing is to create something that is ours; music we like, music we listen to. It’s pretty straight forward. We wanna keep it interesting. And, you know, this is what we do right now, we don’t have an agenda with the type of music or how we look or anything. We are ourselves and we just write whatever we like in that moment, be it a heavy rock song or an indie pop tune. It doesn’t matter. Right now though, we seem to go to the heavier side. I don’t know why… but I like it!
PRESUMABLY YOU’VE BEEN IN BANDS BEFORE. HAVE THOSE EXPERIENCES SHAPED WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FRANKLYS?
Yeah, me and Jen were playing in a Swedish band called Nouveau with our childhood best friends and that was awesome. I think every experience is important and that was a great time, being young and carefree, just doing what you loved. The biggest experience of all for me is that it really is so much hard work behind not only the music part but personally too – sticking to it, respecting your band mates and just trying to have fun creating awesome music!
THE BAND NAME THE FRANKLYS ACTUALLY SUGGESTS WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE MUSIC – IT’S VERY DIRECT… AND THE LYRICS FOR PUPPET, YOUR FORTHCOMING SINGLE, ARE ALSO PRETTY FORTHRIGHT: “YOU NEVER WANTED ME, YOU KICKED ME TO THE GROUND AND LEFT ME THERE TO DIE”…
Jen writes all lyrics and she’s pretty upfront and honest about them in a way I think appeals to a lot of people. You can relate – and if she sings something, she fucking means it!
PUPPET IS OUT ON 7TH APRIL – BUT WHAT ELSE MIGHT 2014 BRING FOR THE FRANKLYS?
Yes, it is. And I can’t wait to release it! We’re always keen to get back into the studio so we’ll get some new tunes out in the near future. We have tons of fun things happening this year – a bunch of festivals, some overseas shows… It’ll be so nice to get on the road and see new places…
