MORRISSEY : introducing morrissey on dvd

FOLLOWING THE RECENT ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF MORRISSEY’S PEERLESS 1994 ALBUM VAUXHALL AND I, IN SEPTEMBER PARLOPHONE WILL RELEASE A 1995 CONCERT FILM PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE IN A DIGITAL FORMAT.

intro morrissey 1After the success of UK number one VAUXHALL AND I, Morrissey took to the roads in February 1995 – his first shows for two years. INTRODUCING MORRISSEY documents two nights from the historic tour and captures Morrissey and band on peak form.
The set list features a handful of songs from VAUXHALL AND I – including UK Top Ten hit single THE MORE YOU IGNORE ME THE CLOSER I GET – plus three from 1992’s YOUR ARSENAL, non-album single BOXERS and b-sides HAVE-A-GO-MERCHANT, WHATEVER HAPPENS I LOVE YOU, Henry Mancini cover version MOONRIVER (first made famous by Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the film BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S) and perennial fan favourite JACK THE RIPPER.
INTRODUCING MORRISSEY is a beautifully filmed reminder of the transcendant experience of early ’90s Morrissey concerts. Arguably at iconic best on the brief 1995 tour, a vaguely menacing Morrissey took the stage each night in (make-up) scars and bruises, emphasising the brutal edges in the set list. Band members Boz Boorer, Jonny Bridgwood, Alain Whyte and Spencer Cobrin took on the daunting challenge of reproducing the subtler textures of VAUXHALL AND I, but the intense and masculine performances were more successful as a reminder of much of the album’s dark underbelly. The inherent threat of tough-loving shows in Sheffield City Hall and the Winter Gardens, Blackpool (Feb 7th and 8th 1995 respectively) was captured by director James O’Brien. His breathtaking concert film – originally issued on video in the mid-1990s – is now available on DVD for the first time.

INTRODUCING MORRISSEY will be released on DVD on 8th September 8th. Read our extensive VAUXHALL AND I retrospective here. Morrissey’s new album WORLD PEACE IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS it out on 15th July.
