THE WONDER STUFF BECAME HOUSEHOLD NAMES IN THE EARLY ’90s WITH RADIO-FRIENDLY HIT SINGLES WELCOME TO THE CHEAP SEATS, THE SIZE OF A COW AND DIZZY (WITH VIC REEVES). BUT IT’S A TRACK FROM THE STOURBRIDGE BAND’S INDIE ROOTS – A SELF-FINANCED DEBUT EP IN 1986 – WHICH FEATURES ON SCARED TO GET HAPPY.
In this new edition of The Mouthcast, frontman Miles Hunt reveals that the song – A WONDERFUL DAY – was “based on” a Pop Will Eat Itself b-side. He also explains why the original session for the EP was a complete disaster due to a win on the football pools and a hearse, and discusses how he first became interested in indie music through his flatmate Clint Mansell (of PWEI), and describes the Black Country sense of humour so apparent in The Wonder Stuff’s biggest hits.
